Perth summers regularly see temperatures above 40°C, which puts enormous stress on your car. Here's how to protect your vehicle during the hot months.
Check Your Cooling System
Your car's cooling system works overtime in summer. Before the heat hits:
- Check coolant levels (never open a hot radiator!)
- Inspect hoses for cracks or swelling
- Ensure the radiator cap seals properly
- Consider a cooling system flush if it's been more than 2 years
Air Conditioning Service
Nothing worse than a failed AC in a Perth summer. Signs your AC needs attention:
- Air isn't as cold as it used to be
- Unusual smells when AC runs
- AC cycles on and off frequently
- Visible moisture or ice on AC components
We recommend an AC service every 2 years to maintain optimal performance.
Battery Care
Heat kills batteries faster than cold. Perth's summers dramatically reduce battery life. If your battery is more than 2-3 years old, have it tested before summer. A failing battery might start your car in winter but fail when temperatures soar.
Tyre Pressure
Hot roads and high temperatures cause tyre pressure to increase. Check your tyre pressures in the morning when they're cold, and set them to the manufacturer's specification. Under-inflated tyres generate more heat and can fail on hot roads.
Protect Your Interior
While not mechanical, protecting your car's interior helps maintain value:
- Use a windscreen sunshade when parked
- Park in shade when possible
- Apply UV protectant to dashboard and leather
- Never leave water bottles in direct sunlight
Emergency Kit
Summer breakdowns can be dangerous. Keep in your car:
- Water (for you, not your radiator)
- Phone charger
- Basic tools
